We're pleased to share that Plato has successfully closed its latest funding round with SFC Capital, raising a total of £260,000. An important step forward in our mission to build trusted, institution-aligned AI infrastructure for universities.
Why We Started Plato
AI is already embedded in student behaviour. But most tools students use today sit outside the academic environment: ungoverned, unaligned to module content, and invisible to institutions.
Universities face a structural challenge: how to embrace AI's potential without compromising academic integrity, learning outcomes, or regulatory accountability.
Plato was built to resolve that tension.
A Different Approach to AI in Universities
Plato is not a generic chatbot. It is an embedded, governed AI study assistant that integrates directly within module materials.
This means:
• Students receive contextual academic support aligned to their course content.
• Academic teams retain visibility and oversight.
• Institutions gain structured analytics on usage, engagement, and learning behaviour.
• AI use becomes transparent, auditable, and strategically manageable.
Our pilots across UK universities demonstrate that when AI is embedded within the learning environment, usage patterns change. Students use it to clarify concepts, deepen understanding, and prepare for assessments more effectively.
Ed Stevenson, Principal at SFC Capital:
“We’re excited to back Plato as they address one of the most important challenges in higher education today: ensuring students receive timely, effective academic support at scale. As universities explore how to integrate AI into teaching and learning, there is a clear need for solutions that enhance the student experience while giving institutions appropriate oversight and insight. We believe this combination of improved student experience and strong institutional oversight positions Plato as an important part of the future of higher education."
What This Funding Enables
This investment allows us to:
• Further develop our analytics and reporting capabilities.
• Strengthen governance, compliance, and institutional controls.
• Continue refining Plato in collaboration with academic partners.
Looking Ahead
The conversation is no longer about whether students will use AI. It is about whether institutions will shape how it is used.
We believe AI in higher education must be governed, pedagogically aligned, and institutionally accountable.
This funding allows us to accelerate that vision.
